Why is it so hard to talk through trauma?

With talk therapy alone, it can be hard to gain progress. We cannot talk out the trauma! This is because trauma lives in both the body and mind and talk engages the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum. We need to process the trauma in another part of the brain called the amygdala and access it there. I will teach you as much or as little as you would like about the brain and how it all works!

What Are Somatic Healing Therapies?

The term somatic comes from the Greek word soma, which means “body.” Somatic healing therapies fall within the spectrum of mind–body therapies, and they specifically refer to those therapies that work with a bottom-up approach. Because of this, somatic healing therapies are also called body–mind therapies and represent the application of somatic psychology, which is the field concerned with the living experience of being embodied and acknowledging this experience as the basis of how we relate to and live in the world. Body–mind therapies use healing interventions that work with the body to access and change feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. These interventions work with the body’s wisdom and leverage personal resources from each client.

I’ve tried a lot of things to feel better. How do I know this is going to work?

Trauma can be confusing, stubborn, or frightening. You have probably tried a variety of things to work through it. With talk therapy alone, it can be hard to gain progress. This is because trauma lives in both the body and mind and talk engages the thinking part of the brain. The most effective way to release trauma is through a combination of talk, sensation, eye movements and mindfulness practices of accessing the traumatic material. Our mission is to help people be released from trauma, become stronger and do the work to achieve what they want to do. While no center can make guarantees, I can tell you as trauma informed specialists, we have processed all types of traumas in people who have told us they feel more at ease and more capable in their lives after receiving somatic therapies. Along with way, I will be asking for your feedback to find out how things are going, how your needs are being met and how we can adjust if a better approach is needed.

Do you use religion in your therapies?

You can be as religious or spiritual as you would be comfortable with. Or not at all if that is what you want. This is your journey, and you will live it your way.

How can this work, online?

We will talk and visit using Zoom and I can guide you in the a Somatic Healing. We use eye movement, and it works the same way as in person. I will email the tools (work sheets) to you for between sessions and extra healing time! You will be more relaxed and more comfortable at home or in your own environment. This way too, you won’t have to drive home afterwards which is recommended. Drinking a lot of water and have rest after and no driving for a couple hours is a must!

Am I going to have to go back and re-experience all of the bad things that happened to me?

Only if it is what you want. You set the pace. My only goal is to help you feel better. Some people like talking about the past; others do not. I can work with you in ways that feel best for you. You have choices. It will not help you get better faster if you experience all the bad things in an unstructured way. We want to “Clear out the memory of it all” gently and create healing for you to move forward. This means exposure therapy, if you would like or not at all and let the mind work through it as I guide you in the session. We can take many different approaches and most importantly, I do not need to know about your traumatic event, in order to help you heal. So, NO you do not need to relive it! For a therapeutic benefit, I provide short and long-term treatment. I can provide you with many tools for you to work with at home too, between our sessions. Like most things, what you put into the process will determine what you get out of it. I can promise that this will be a positive and relaxing experience. Life changing for the best!

I’ve tried therapy before, how is this different?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions about trauma counseling. There are lots of different types of trauma therapy treatment available, however, to release trauma, specific modalities are needed. Somatic therapies bring in the body so not only do we talk about what is going on, we attend to your breathing, heart rate, and teach self-soothing techniques which are especially helpful if you should become triggered or overwhelmed. EMDR therapy helps put past memories in the past, so they do not intrude upon your daily life. Brain Spotting works with the eyes to reach the subcortical regions of the brain where trauma is held to give context to the past and takes away its power over you. Whether it was a one-time incident or took place over time, I can help you. I am collaborative in my approach so we will create a plan that works for you. We as trauma informed somatic healing coaches, have more tools in our tool belts than others and we look forward to helping you with whatever is going on.

Do you work with other issues besides trauma?

Yes! I am here to help with issues related to living life. Whether it is the relationship with yourself and how you are coping, or if you are a victim of narcissistic abuse. I am interested in helping you get clarity on how you are taking care of yourself. If you are regulating yourself with drugs, alcohol, shopping or other behavior means to feel better – and you feel this is not working – we can help. I will help you navigate codependency. If you are suffering from anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, or grief, I understand and can give you tools and skills to work your way out of these feelings. My goal is to help you feel better about whatever it is you are dealing with. In addition to therapy, we may ask you to read articles or books or do some writing. All these suggestions will be based on what is a fit for you.

How do I know if I am the narcissist or if I am being emotionally abused by a narcissist? How do I know who is the problem? How can I fix it if I don’t even know?

First, if you wonder if you are a narcissist, then you are not a narcissist. Narcissists don’t blame themselves or take responsibility for the things that are harming you. They won’t concern themselves as to if they are the issue. You cannot fix a narcissist, we need to help you adapt your life to be more enjoyable with techniques on dealing with the narcissist in your life. Weather that is a spouse, boss, parent, sibling… OR I will help you cope with the pain of leaving and provide information and tools as well as therapies to help you regain your life, after the narcissist. I am here, I believe you and I can help you as a fellow survivor turned to therapy just as you are doing now!
